Skin tag

SKIN TAG

Skin tags are small, harmless growths that typically appear on the skin in areas where there is friction, such as on the neck, armpits, and groin. They are composed of collagen fibers and blood vessels and are usually skin-colored or slightly darker.

CAUSES

The exact cause of skin tags is not known, but they are more common in individuals who are overweight or have diabetes. They may also be more likely to occur in areas where the skin rubs against clothing or other skin, or as a result of hormonal changes during pregnancy.

TREATMENT

Skin tags are usually not a cause for concern and do not require treatment unless they are causing discomfort or cosmetic concerns. If a skin tag is bothering you, your dermatologist can remove it using one of several methods, including:

  • Snipping the skin tag off with scissors.
  • Freezing the skin tag with liquid nitrogen.
  • Burning the skin tag off with an electric current.
  • Cutting off the blood supply to the skin tag with a small band.

While skin tags are not usually a sign of an underlying health problem, it is always a good idea to have any new growths on the skin checked by a dermatologist to rule out the possibility of skin cancer or other serious conditions.
